Impact on SMEs (6th Open Call)
EU Digital Single Market Copyright Directive aims to facilitate a fairer marketplace for rights holders. Effective IP rights management in the digital environment is key to support the competitiveness of creative SMEs. ISO/IEC 21000-23 Smart Contracts for Media supported by rich semantic copyright models can be handy when data-based decisions need to be derived by evidence and logic, leading to new business models that can be efficiently deployed on decentralised digital media platforms. Moreover, the interoperability of such platforms is addressed by ISO/IEC 23000-23 Decentralised Media Rights Application Format which building around DLT-agnostic ISO/IEC 21000-23 Smart Contracts for Media has the potential to unlock the Semantic Web and in turn the creative economy. The latter is not only one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the world economy, but also a highly transformative one in terms of income-generation, job creation, export earnings, quality of life and social cohesion.

Impact on SMEs (1st Open Call)
Many of the proposed use case contributions continue to spring from our outreach to European experts within SDOs, companies and SMEs. The ISO/TC 307 WG6 programme
provides an active forum for SMEs to:
- Contribute and discuss EU technical initiatives on emerging international standards representing European values, ethics & regulations such as privacy (e.g.: privacy - GDPR/ eIDAS) and European green transition initiatives (e.g.: EBSI blockchain to create trusted digital audit trails).
- SMEs can gain the opportunity to understand the value of standards, via example use cases and models. The use cases provide insights and cross-domain example that can inform SMEs in their product development, and adoption of their technologies.
- Review international use cases and gain insights for EU participation in local markets, or in cross-border /sector issues.
- The Vienna Agreement enables ISO standards to be freely shared with CEN/CENELEC members, including SMEs.
Impact on SMEs (3rd Open Call)
This contribution has a wide impact for European SMEs. One example is where in my role as Convenor of ISO/TC307 WG6 Use Cases, we invite international SME experts to
get involved in regulatory and standards development processes by sharing their insights and creating use cases into emerging technologies.
This approach can enable faster adoption of their business and technical models, and for European SMEs, who create perspectives consistent with EU regulations and societies, such as privacy (GDPR, AI Act) and sustainability (Net Zero and ESG). (See section 2.1) In the lead-up to the ISO/TC 307 Plenary on 4 June 2024, we have gathered 10+ SMEs to showcase and present leading DLT solutions from SMEs, plus involvement in multiple SDO and entrepreneur events including Blockchain Ireland, INABTA etc.
Impact on SMEs (4th Open Call)
The contribution impacts European SMEs and/or European societies and decision-makers on a high level by developing technical standards in DLT/Blockchain that reflect European democratic values including.
- E-Privacy: EU Artificial Intelligence Act, new Data Act, GDPR
- Fintech and Def: MiCA crypto
- Sustainable initiatives: carbon markets, smart energy
- Interoperable platforms: EBSI, digital product passports
Moreover, I see two major impacts with SMEs. Firstly, international standards enable faster technical adoption for SMEs, as ISO standards provide ‘templates’ of technical systems and guidelines, that provide a baseline for SMEs to build their own solutions that are interoperable and lower risk for potential partners/investors.
Secondly, SME are involved in standards development: The use case methodology in ISO/TC 307 WG6 is based on active outreach to SMEs who are pioneering new DLT capabilities. They provide contributions to the standards through ISO/TC 307 WG6 and ongoing external business events.
Impact on society (1st Open Call)
The DLT/Blockchain technology is often referred to as ‘the technology of trust’. This ISO feature on my work at ISO/TC 307 and WG6 Use Cases explains the societal impacts of trust across supply chains, digital trust, data provenance, Energy trading, records management, Anti-counterfeit pharma and food safety and provenance.
Over recent years, blockchain has evolved into a transformational technology promising to offer secure, real-time transactions across different sectors and industries that will
revolutionise the way we do business. ISO is at the forefront of this technology to ensure that its users all speak the same language.
Impact on society (3rd Open Call)
This work sources use cases that can support societal impacts across international priorities such as Net Zero goals for climate change. They can support European values,
democracy, and human rights based on European societal regulations including:
- Privacy: new Data Act, GDPR
- Fintech and Defi: MiCA crypto regulations
- Sustainable initiatives: carbon markets
- Interoperable platforms: EBSI, digital passports,
- And in 2024 the EU Artificial Intelligence Act

Impact on SMEs (4th Open Call)
Despite the fact that 95% of industries are composed of SMEs, there is a significant underrepresentation of this organisation's viewpoint on standards development. I am the liaison officer of the Small Business Standards in all the TCs at ISO. I contribute to giving a voice to European SMEs in standardisation at the European and international levels. In addition, to provide comments in the meetings I promote the use of the compatibility test of the SBS and collaborate in the workshops to facilitate the mutual understanding among the industry and the SDOs.
Impact on society (4th Open Call)
These standardisation efforts support the achievement of the objectives of the Green Deal and the SDGs, as well as the political objectives of the European Commission and support for the New European Standardization Strategy. As a convenor position of a key working group at the ISO level, I am able to promote the European values in standards development. In addition, this action promotes the improvement in the efficiency of public services with the use of reliable applications and technologies that contribute to sustainable development.

Impact on SMEs (9th Open Call)
Blockchain and Distributed Ledger technologies are developed directly in a global environment and thus the activity impacts EU and SMEs in EU, as for the way EU specificities and regulations (e.g. GDPR, eIDAS, NIS, MiCA) considered as early as possible. Also many SMEs in EU are positioned around security of web 3.0 applications and on decentralized identity and future standards on this matter would be key for procurement.
Impact on society (5th Open Call)
Toward the development of EU-friendly solutions for biometrics-based services, employing strong privacy enhancing technologies, thus going further contractual/organisational requirements, to ensure privacy and security by design. Promoting the use of the newest privacy enhancing technologies is in particular very important (biometric technologies are more and more seen as a way to fight against authentication/identification threats in our digital lives) as sharing or leaking biometric information without appropriate protection can be very critical.

Impact on SMEs (6th Open Call)
My work has a direct impact on European SMEs and society. By contributing to standards like ISO/IEC 27560 and the EUDI Wallet Access Control in CEN TC224/WG20, I help create practical, privacy-focused frameworks that SMEs can adopt with minimal cost and complexity. These standards enable GDPR-compliant consent, transparency, and data minimization, reducing legal risk and building user trust.
Impact on SMEs (9th Open Call)
My work simplifies GDPR compliance for European SMEs by developing standards that make privacy receipts and access control both practical and cost-effective. By embedding lawful bases and user-facing transparency into consent and data access records, SMEs can demonstrate accountability while reducing legal risk. For society, this promotes stronger digital rights, user agency, and trust in the EUDI Wallet ecosystem.
Impact on society (6th Open Call)
In terms of broader European interests, my fellowship contributes to EU goals of digital sovereignty, user empowerment, and privacy leadership on the global stage. As the EUDI wallet is adopted across Europe, this framework will provide a scalable model for data protection and user-centric identity management that can be extended beyond digital wallets to other data-sharing contexts, enhancing Europe’s role as a privacy leader. With data privacy becoming a key competitive factor, this initiative not only strengthens the protection of EU citizens’ rights but also sets a high standard for digital identity solutions globally.
Impact on society (9th Open Call)
My work supports fundamental societal values by helping define how citizens can safely and transparently share their personal data through the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. At the heart of this is the development of access control standards that ensure individuals are not just passive data subjects, but active participants who can decide what data is shared, with whom, under what conditions, and for what declared purpose.
By enabling these controls through enforceable, machine-readable policies, the standard empowers users to exercise real agency over their digital identity—moving beyond consent screens toward meaningful privacy protections embedded in the architecture of the wallet itself. This aligns with the EU’s commitment to privacy, data minimisation, and purpose limitation under the GDPR.
The work also supports societal inclusion by ensuring that access control mechanisms are transparent and usable, helping citizens understand their rights and obligations, while also simplifying compliance for service providers. The inclusion of ISO/IEC 27560 in this framework ensures that all lawful bases for processing—not just consent—are clearly documented and traceable, which is especially important for use cases like healthcare, education, or public services.
Importantly, the open availability of ISO/IEC 27560 as a free standard lowers the barrier for adoption, supporting uptake by public administrations, SMEs, and civil society. This ensures that privacy-enhancing technologies are not limited to large commercial actors, but can benefit all layers of European society.
Overall, this work contributes to a more trustworthy, transparent, and citizen-centric digital identity ecosystem—one that upholds European values while supporting innovation, cross-border interoperability, and regulatory alignment.
