The StandICT.eu 2026 and OpenVerse projects are pleased to announce a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking a joint commitment to support standardisation activities in the rapidly evolving domain of Virtual Worlds.
This collaboration reflects a shared ambition: strengthening Europe’s role in shaping open, inclusive, and secure virtual environments through expert engagement, strategic alignment, and policy dialogue.
The two projects will cooperate across a wide range of activities including:
- Exchange of best practices on immersive technologies and emerging standards.
- Joint communication and outreach, amplifying awareness of European priorities.
- Co-organisation of expert events, including a flagship session on Virtual Worlds.
- Cross-platform visibility, connecting repositories, stakeholder networks, and resources.
- Establishment and facilitation of a dedicated Working Group on Virtual Worlds standardisation.
This newly formed Virtual Worlds Standardisation Technical Working Group (TWG) will serve as a dynamic space for expert collaboration. It will conduct landscape and gap analyses, engage in stakeholder consultations, and provide recommendations to help shape interoperable Virtual Worlds across Europe and beyond.
The initiative draws on the strengths of both projects:
- OpenVerse, contributes a strong foundation in stakeholder engagement and technological roadmapping for Virtual Worlds, with a focus on co-creation, accessibility, and sovereignty.
- StandICT.eu 2026, brings extensive experience in mobilising ICT standardisation experts, fostering global dialogue, and supporting EU presence in international standard-setting bodies.
The MoU sets a flexible and future-oriented framework, enabling both initiatives to evolve their collaboration in response to the needs of the ecosystem.
This partnership marks a key milestone in aligning European efforts for Virtual Worlds standardisation, ensuring Europe not only participates, but leads.
