- Use Cases for Virtual Worlds Standardization Through Standards for Use Cases
Web 4.0 and virtual worlds
Virtual Worlds standards are being set now, mostly without European leadership. The repository gives European actors a way to shape them with evidence. It applies IEC 62559, the method behind the EU smart grid mandate M/490, so that use cases from any contributor become comparable, and gaps can be pointed at rather than argued about. Its use cases are linked to standards, to the research agenda (SRIA) of the Virtual Worlds Association, and to the Metaverse Standards Forum's Spatial Systems Atlas, which records what systems actually support. SMEs gain three things: their deployments count as evidence in ISO/IEC work without committee membership; a shared vocabulary lowers the cost of entry; and interoperability gaps become visible before they turn into lock-in. If ISO/IEC calls for use cases adopt the same template, European contributions flow into standards work systematically, not by chance.

This long-term fellowship supports my works on use case methodology for Virtual Worlds standardisation, applying IEC 62559 so that use cases from industry, research and education become comparable and traceable to the standards they need.
I am an expert member in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 24 through DIN NA 043-01-24 AA, active in WG 10, AHG 2 and AHG 3 on the ISO/IEC 24931 metaverse series, especially Part 2 (framework and architecture) and Part 3 (use cases), and in JWG 12 on use cases and design guidelines for VR/AR/MR in learning, education and training (PWI 26952, AWI 25689). As well as within the StandICT.eu TWG Virtual Worlds, where I developed the Virtual Worlds Use Case Repository and the Virtual Worlds Glossary.
