First live meeting of CEN/CENELEC FGQT in Berlin 3-5 Nov. 2021 .

Positive decision on QT roadmap restructuring; inclusion of QKD security certification roadmap

Last week, 3-5 Nov. 2021, the CEN/CENELEC Focus Group Quantum Technologies FGQT had its first face-to-face meeting since its inception, generously hosted by DIN right in the centre of Berlin. The goal of the FGQT is to establish a roadmap for quantum technologies standards, in the field of quantum computing, quantum sensing and simulation, as well as quantum communication.

The meeting was very successful, as all about 20 attendees stated, and furthermore, after the long Covid break, a very positive personal experience (except of an unbelievable travelling disaster on departure day at the new BER airport). We had a broad introductory round, where people presented themselves, and it became evident how much expertise of the highest extent, from all over Europe, is represented in the group. This helped build up trust in the abilities of its members, and we were able to easily resolve lingering conflicts we had about the restructuring of the of the current QT roadmap document. This points out, how important face-to-face meetings are, especially in the beginning of such group activities, and that they cannot entirely be replaced by online meetings. Nevertheless, to reduce the disadvantages of travelling for people and the environment, we will go on with our regular online meeting schedule, and meet again face-to-face in May next year in Leyden, NL (18.-20 May).

The author, who just finished his StandICT project “QKD Common Criteria Certification – Intermediate Review and Assessment” (ID 02-259) was able to reach his projected goals, and was unanimously designated co-editor of the current QT standardisation roadmap document, of which a first version—it will be a continuously revised, living document—was decided to be made available in spring next year. Moreover, he was officially engaged to provide the initial section for a Quantum Key Distribution security standardisation roadmap, and maintain it in the future. This was one central goal of his ID 02-259 StandICT project—and the basis for his current project submission 04-467: "QKD Common Criteria Certification - Coordination and Support of Current Activities".

Thanks Thomas for the very exhaustive report of the event and the very nice mention of the work carried out under the StandICT.eu project.  Very insightful that you also pointed out how these meetings taking place physically can work more effectively than the virtual mode.
