5G and Beyond (6G)
European SMEs started to be quite active in 3GPP with the specification work of 5G, especially on aspects relevant to Verticals. In particular, SMEs are quite active in IMT-2020 satellite aspects and can benefit from the inclusion of 3GPP solutions in global standards defined by ITU.
Satellite communications are a key enabler to provide inclusion by reaching remote areas and ensure safety and communications during disasters. It is important that standardised solutions are made available (e.g., via 3GPP) and then made into ITU Recommendations which provide the Regulatory framework for a large number of countries.

European SMEs started to be quite active in 3GPP with the specification work of 5G, especially on aspects relevant to Verticals. In particular, SMEs are quite active in IMT-2020 satellite aspects and can benefit from the inclusion of 3GPP solutions in global standards defined by ITU. Novamint as an SME directly benefits from this grant allowing me to attend the 3GPP workshop on 6G during the RAN plenary in March.
Satellite communications are a key enabler to inclusion by reaching remote areas and ensuring safety and communications during disasters. Satellite IoT is another important market allowing low cost monitoring of goods and environment in remote areas, thus fully complementing the terrestrial networks.

5G and Beyond (6G)
The ongoing collaboration between 3GPP and ITU ensures a global regulatory framework for the use of spectrum. Moreover, many countries rely on ITU to develop their Regulations. Ensuring that 3GPP specifications are included in ITU Recommendations ensures that they are recognised at a global regulatory level, avoiding that proprietary solutions become the de facto solutions. This is particularly critical in satellite communications. In general, the adoption of open standards benefits the EU thanks to a global market access and interoperability.

My contribution was to prepare the summary of the updates to be included in the revision of ITU-R Recommendations M.2012 (IMT-Advanced) and M.2150 (IMT-2020), which was submitted to the 3GPP RAN ITU-R AD-Hoc and subsequently approved by 3GPP RAN, SA, and PCG. This fellowship also support my roles as convener of the 3GPP RAN ITU-R Ad-Hoc and chair of the ITU sessions in RAN.
